About the Artist — Mark Kuykendall

Mark Kuykendall is a composer, producer, visual artist, and curator who spent more than a decade operating Unknown Tone Records, an independent label known internationally for its beauty, sensitivity, and attention to detail. Over the course of more than 60 releases from artists across 30 countries, Mark guided the full creative direction of the label’s visual identity, designing and shaping album artwork that felt personal, artful, and deeply intentional rather than mass-produced.

His work carries a distinct aesthetic rooted in boutique, handmade traditions including letterpress, tactile object design, limited-edition formats, and thoughtfully crafted packaging. Mark draws from a private archive of original artwork, textures, photography, and graphic material, as well as timeless layout inspirations from past eras of art and record design, to create album visuals that feel grounded, cinematic, and emotionally resonant.

Rather than following trends, Mark’s design approach values longevity, coherence, narrative strength, and artistic integrity. Albums are designed to feel like artifacts—objects with presence, meaning, and staying power.

Clients may provide their own copyright-cleared artwork or photography to incorporate into the design process. These services do not include arranging or conducting photo shoots, but instead focus on expert layout, conceptual cohesion, visual direction, and final preparation of print-ready materials for both digital and physical album releases.
